The SHOWER SHIRT™ is a patented, water-resistant garment which protects against the risk of post-surgical infections after chest surgery. Introduced to the US market in 2011, the product is now sold internationally in Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Israel. The inspiration behind the creation came after Crites was told she couldn’t shower for three weeks after bi-lateral mastectomy surgery due to post-surgical drains. “I began looking for a water-resistant garment for protection. Nothing existed so I utilized a trash bag,” said Crites, The SHOWER SHIRT CO., principal/inventor. “Insulted by being wrapped in a plastic trash bag, I felt a product needed to be created for future mastectomy patients, thus, The SHOWER SHIRT™ was invented.”
Four-years later, The SHOWER SHIRT™ is a Class 1 Medical Device registered with the FDA; has full patent status, sold online with Walmart.com medical device division, AMAZON, CureDiva.com, Health Products for You and multiple mastectomy boutiques and hospital-based retail locals across the United States.
“My goal is to make women feel better after the physical trauma of having their breasts amputated,” Crites added. “It stands to reason if a patient feels better physically, they will feel better emotionally, something severely needed after breast cancer and mastectomy surgery.”
The product is also being utilized for hemodialysis patients, bariatric and transplant patients; hernia, external defibrillator, rotator cuff surgery patients and also patients needing wound vacs, infusion pumps, and central lines.
