How Price Comparison Sites for Parcel Deliveries Work

Price comparison sites date back to the boom in internet use during the late 1990’s. Sites started to appear which would help customers find the best price for online purchases by comparing different products across the net.

As the internet became more sophisticated these sites started to operate in real-time and a whole new way to buy online emerged.

These days most people have used a price comparison suite to buy something online. Insurance was an early leader followed by the automotive industries and eventually most other goods and services.

Sending a parcel in the UK or overseas was, traditionally, the preserve of the Royal Mail for customers and one preferred Courier Company for businesses. But recently a few parcel delivery sites have sprung up. So how do they work?

It is normally a very simple process.

First customers fill in a form about parcel requirements, including how much it weighs. This is simple – just use bathroom or kitchen scales to weigh it. Then, having filled in pick-up details and the destination address the site compares the market and will offer the customer a few options from carriers such as City Link, Parcel Force etc. Next the customer books the one which suits best and having completed a short form, the site should sends a confirmation email with a print-out to attach to the parcel (this has the barcode on it and is as simple as sticking paper to cardboard). Finally the customer waits at home or in the office and the carrier company picks up the parcel(s) at the agreed time. It really couldn’t be simpler.

Comparing market prices and services makes sense. It is much easier to do this on one site than trawling through all of the separate carriers trying to note who is cheapest or offers the best service. As the internet enters its third phase it seems certain that consumer choice and services will continue to become ever more sophisticated, automated and consumer-friendly.
