Dirk Nowitzki signed a three year extension to his current contract with the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday. The extension, worth just under $60 million, will begin after his current contract expires at the end of the 2007-08 season.
The 28-year-old German is the Mavericks all-time leading rebounder, and ranks third in franchise scoring. After the signing team owner Mark Cuban said “We are glad to keep Dirk in the Mavericks family for many more years.”
Nowitzki joined the Mavericks in 1998 and has become one of the NBA’s premier stars. He led the Mavericks to last year’s finals before falling to Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat.
With teammates Jason Terry, Jerry Stackhouse, and Josh Howard returning to play under Avery Johnson, the Mavericks are looking to claim the first NBA title in franchise history
