Michael Jackson: Fame Enabled Drug Addiction?

Fame-Struck Doctors Enabled Michael Jackson’s Drug Addiction?

While thousands attend Michael Jackson’s memorial service, and millions mourn around the world, many in his close circle wonder why it ever came to this: a talented musical king, right before a much anticipated tour, struck down by prescription drug addiction.

While a shock to millions, close friends feared this day would come.  Some of those close to him saw the signs of drug abuse and tried to alert the others around him.

It seems that Michael Jackson was surrounded by an army of physicians willing to prescribe him drugs. Friend Tarak Ben Ammar also called Jackson a hypochondriac. “'One never really knew if he was sick, because he had become surrounded by charlatan doctors who were billing him thousands of dollars' worth of drugs and vitamins.”

Others close to Jackson such as his attorney Brian Oxman were aware of his drug abuse. Oxman said in numerous interviews that he was aware of the problem and had warned family members that this might happen. Oxman said he would name those responsible if Michael’s death turns out to be drug related.

Deepak Chopra, who had known Michael for twenty years published a loving tribute to the mis-understood pop star in the Huffington post.  He wrote:

“It's not my place to comment on the troubles Michael fell heir to from the past and then amplified by his misguided choices in life. He was surrounded by enablers, including a shameful plethora of M.D.s in Los Angeles and elsewhere who supplied him with prescription drugs. As many times as he would candidly confess that he had a problem, the conversation always ended with a deflection and denial. As I write this paragraph, the reports of drug abuse are spreading across the cable news channels. The instant I heard of his death this afternoon, I had a sinking feeling that prescription drugs would play a key part.”

Michael Jackson has left an indelible mark with his talent, which was almost too good for this world.  This is what he will be remembered for in the long run.

Unfortunately, temporarily, we are focusing on his misguided circumstance of being drug dependent.  We have seen this before – talent being put to the grave with drugs.

Perhaps for just a moment, Michael’s death will bring awareness and one celebrity life who is out their abusing drugs, can be saved.

If it happens, it will happen because a medical doctor decided to do the right thing.
