An earthquake struck the central coast of Chile Tuesday evening, but did not cause any injuries or deaths. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter of the 5.6 magnitude tremor was located in the region of Coquimbo about 100 miles north of Valparaiso. It struck at 14.6 miles deep at 8:20 p.m. local time.
The quake was felt in the regions of Maule and O’Higgins as well as the capital of Santiago. Authorities did not issue a tsunami warning. No damage was reported, but some residents experienced minor communication problems shortly after the earthquake.
In February 2010, a major 8.8 magnitude struck central Chile and triggered a tsunami. More than 500 people died. A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Araucania region in January of last year, but did not generate a tsunami. No damages, injuries, or deaths were reported.
