Truck driver dead after his rig plunges over overpass

The driver of double UPS truck died early Wednesday morning when he lost control and plunged over a highway overpass, according to Charlotte station WCNC.

The accident occurred around 1:30 and caused two lanes of I-85 southbound to be closed for hours for cleanup.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said the Gary Darnell Wilkerson, 58; a freight truck driver for UPS crashed the double trailer truck near exit 79. His tractor trailer plunged over the highway over pass onto McCanless Road below. One of the trailers was left dangling over the bridge.

Wilkerson was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident and was thrown out of his vehicle.

Representatives for UPS said the truck did not have any hazardous cargo and contained a shipment of cigarettes. Highway patrol says that some people looted the truck right after the accident.

Crews worked for hours to clean up the debris. The exact cause of the accident has not been determined but UPS is trying to figure out of the left front tire blew out.
