Kip Smith, a Republican lawmaker in Georgia, who co-sponsored a bill that would require welfare recipients to take a drug test before receiving benefits, was arrested last week for DUI.
An Atlanta police officer stopped Smith when ha ran red light after leaving a Sandy Springs bar. The officer said a strong odor of alcohol came from Smith’s car. The officer then asked Smith to submit to a sobriety test but he initially refused. He failed a few of the field sobriety tests.
Once the officer explained that he would be arrested, he was given a breathalyzer test. The officer took three readings which ranged from .91 to .99, well above the legal limit of .08.
The irony of this charge is that Smith co-sponsored a bill in the Georgia legislature that would require individuals who receive welfare to pass a drug test.
Even though Smith is lawmaker he will still need the assistance of a
DUI attorney.
In a statement to the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer Smith said, “Mistakes were made and I take full responsibility for them,” he continued, “I understand there are consequences and there’s no excuse.”
Smith is right a DUI is a serious charge and there are equally serious consequences. A
