Ryan Brunn, the Georgia man who confessed to the brutal murder of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera, was found dead in his cell at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson on Thursday afternoon. Georgia Department of Corrections spokeswoman Kristen Stancil said it appears Brunn, 20, committed suicide. Brunn was found unresponsive around 4:15 p.m. and was pronounced dead at a hospital at 5:37 p.m.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed Brunn hanged himself with a sweatshirt. An autopsy was conducted Friday and no signs of foul play were found. "The ongoing investigation by agents from the GBI's Milledgeville Regional Office has not uncovered any evidence to indicate Brunn's death was anything other than a suicide,” the bureau said in a statement. "The medical examiner found no other significant trauma on Brunn's body.”
Brunn’s death came two days after he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility for parole. He pleaded guilty to Jorely’s December 2nd murder and described to the court in detail how he lured the child into an empty apartment in the Canton complex where he performed maintenance work. Brunn said he sexually assaulted Jorely before stabbing and beating her to death. He then dumped her body in a trash compactor at the apartment complex.
