Over the years Hollywood and the entertainment industry has had a number of the un-glamorous stories about the glamorous.
• Actor Heath Ledger was found dead of an overdose in his apartment in Manhattan. Ledger was 28.
• Anna Nicole Smith died at the age of 39 from accidental overdose of chloral hydrate and other prescription drugs.
• Chris Farley died of a drug overdose of cocaine and heroin.
• River Phoenix died as a result of taking a combination of cocaine and heroin outside of the night club The Viper Room. He was 23 years old.
• At the age of 36, Marilyn Monroe died in her sleep of barbiturate poisoning (an overdose of sleeping pills). To this day, no one knows for sure whether her death was a suicide or homicide.
• John Belushi, beloved comic of Saturday Night Live fame, dead of an overdose of cocaine and heroin, at the age of 33.
• Elvis Presley, the King, died at the age of 42, and was also taking quantities of codeine, Valium, morphine, and Demerol, to name a few, at the time of his death.
• Michael Jackson. Even as his memorial service is being held, local and federal investigators are looking into the number of drugs he was prescribed before his un-timely death.
These are just a few of the deaths. Death is not the only consequence of drug use. Richard Pryor once set himself on fire during a drug induced psychosis.
Uncomfortably, the world watches as another celebrity’s battle with drug addiction is on prime time.
Even though we will not know the exact nature of Michael Jackson’s death for several weeks, the reports from his friends and family suggest that Jackson was continually battling drug addiction.
The sources say that Jackson had sought drug treatment several times and that he most recently spent several hours a day at an outpatient drug rehab.
It seems the celebrity lifestyle is the perfect cover for drug abuse. Stars are not limited in the way of funds and they are surrounded by staff whose job it is to cater to their every whim.
In the end however the addictions facing stars are no different than any other drug addict faces. Drug use becomes more important than careers or even lives. The consequences of use grow and grow until the addict is either forced to deal with the situation or the addict dies.
This is what we are seeing in the cases of celebrity deaths. The drug addiction is not handled and grows to be a huge problem. In the case of celebrity it seems that the drug addiction has more time to grow without consequences.
There is a truism that an addict has to hit rock bottom before they reach for help. For those who are completely enabled, unfortunately often that rock bottom is death.
