Aretha Franklin has called off her summer wedding to longtime friend William Wilkerson. The Queen of Soul, who announced her engagement earlier this month, released a statement Monday saying their relationship was moving “a little too fast.”
"Regretfully, To Our Friends and Supporters: Will and I have decided we were moving a little too fast, and there were a number of things that had not been thought through thoroughly. There will be no wedding at this time. We will not comment on it any further because of the very personal and sensitive nature of it. We appreciate all of the many well wishes from friends,” Franklin said.
It would have been the 69-year-old’s third marriage. Her first marriage to Ted White ended in 1969 after 9 years while her two-year marriage to actor Glynn Turman ended in 1984.
