Jorge Posada Announces Retirement

New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada announced his retirement on Tuesday.  The 40 year old catcher is retiring after 17 seasons and five titles with the Yankees.

Posada is finishing his career with a .273 career batting average.  He also has 275 home runs and 1,065 RBIs.  Posada’s playing time has decreased since he was shifted to designated hitter last year.

Posada will be joining Bernie Williams and Andy Pettitte in retirement.  This leaves 37 year old Derek Jeter and 42 year old Mariano Rivera from the original group responsible for leading the Yankees to four World Series titles from 1996-2000.

During his statement on Tuesday, Posada quoted Joe DiMaggio saying, “I want to thank the good Lord for making me a Yankee.”  He was also quoted as saying, “I could never wear another uniform.”  “I will forever be a Yankee.”
