Findings Link Drug Use and IQ

Studies that were done and published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health are stating that when a child has a high IQ it can be linked to subsequent illegal drug use. They based their findings on data from 8,000 people in the 1970 British Cohort Study. This study looks at lifetime drug use, socioeconomic factors and educational attainment. They measured IQ of participants at the ages of 5 and 10. Then they gathered more information from these same people at ages 16 and then again at 30. By the age of 30 one in three men (35.4%) and one in six women (15.9%) had used cannabis, while 8.6% of men and 3.6% of women had used cocaine in the previous 12 months. Then they took the factor of intelligence and the study showed that men with high IQ scores at the age of 5 were around 50% more likely to have used amphetamines, ecstasy and several illicit drugs than those with low scores, 25 years later. The link was even stronger among women. When they took in other factors like anxiety/depression during adolescence, parental social class and lifetime household income the results stayed the same. A study suggests that the higher IQ the child has means they will adopt a healthy lifestyle as an adult but other studies show the high IQ child will have excess alcohol intake and alcohol dependency in adulthood. The only thing they can come up with is that children who are intelligent are more open to experiences and love to have stimulation and may suffer from boredom.

Long term drug rehabs in Kentucky and other states would benefit from this information.

Alright now this study gives many of us a justification for the drug use we are doing. Most of us did not have our IQ checked when we were children but it sounds like they are saying that smart people just get bored so they drink and drug. What do you think?
