The transvaginal mesh attorneys at Greg Coleman Law PC want the public to be informed that the FDA has issued a serious alert about the complications from vaginal mesh implants. Vaginal meshes are used in order to counteract the effects of Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) and Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI). The FDA wants those patients who have undergone these implants or who are considering this procedure to be aware of the risks of mesh erosions, pain during sex and the rate of infection. The FDA sent letters to the manufacturers of transvaginal mesh (which including Johnson & Johnson, Bard and Boston Scientific) asking them to study the effects of transvaginal mesh on infection, recurrence of prolapsed and incontinence. If you are suffering from unlabeled side effects due to a transvaginal mesh implant, you may be eligible to file a class action lawsuit for a defective product. In 2008, the FDA alerted the public regarding the complications of transvaginal mesh placements to treat pelvic organ prolapsed and stress urinary incontinence. The FDA claimed that the number of adverse events related to the use of surgical mesh devices was “over 1,000.” Between 2008 and 2010, the FDA received 2,874 additional reports of transvaginal mesh complications, with the most common complaints being pain (especially during intercourse), infection, bleeding, and organ perforation. In a systematic review performed by the FDA, the two major causes of the mesh complications stemmed from mesh erosion and mesh contraction. Mesh erosion can require multiple surgeries to repair and may never be fully resolved. Mesh contraction has been linked to vaginal shortening and pain. Furthermore, it was found that mesh used in transvaginal repair introduces risks not found in traditional Pelvic Organ Prolapse surgeries and there is no evident benefit compared to the traditional surgery.
