The FDA claimed that the number of adverse events related to the use of surgical mesh devices was “over 1,000.” Between 2008 and 2010, the FDA received 2,874 additional reports of transvaginal mesh complications, with the most common complaints being pain (especially during intercourse), infection, bleeding, and organ perforation. In a systematic review performed by the FDA, the two major causes of the mesh complications stemmed from mesh erosion and mesh contraction. Mesh erosion can require multiple surgeries to repair and may never be fully resolved. Mesh contraction has been linked to vaginal shortening and pain.
