Iraqi Colonel Survives Suicide Attack On Funeral Procession For Relatives

Iraqi authorities believe Colonel Norman Dakhil may have been the target of a deadly suicide attack near a funeral procession for his brother and two other relatives in Baghdad on Friday. Officials say Col. Dakhil was part of the Shiite funeral procession, but he escaped the attack unharmed. At least 31 people were killed and 60 others were wounded.

The funeral procession was en route to a hospital in the district of Zafarniya to recover the bodies when a suicide bomber in a car detonated his explosives. Buildings near the explosion sustained major damage. Witnesses reported windows had been shattered and several buildings caught fire.

Police say Dakhil’s three relatives had been killed in a shooting on Thursday. It is unclear if the same person or group was behind the shooting and suicide attack.
