Indonesians have begun to cast their votes in the country’s presidential election and early polls have indicated incumbent Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono holds a solid lead over his two closest rivals, former president Megawati Sukarnoputri and outgoing Vice-President Jusuf Kalla.
Polling stations opened in Indonesia’s easternmost region of Papua on Wednesday morning with the rest of the country voting later in the day. More than 500,000 station shave been set up to accommodate the 176 million registered voters.
A large contingent of police and soldiers are expected in the province of Aceh, an area that has been the site of unrest over the past several years.
Yudhoyono, leader of the Democratic Party, defeated then President Megawati Sukarnoputri in 2004 and has established a strong name following economic growth in the country.
