Costa Rican President Oscar Arias has been selected to lead mediations in an attempt to solve the current political crisis that has gripped Honduras.
The decision was announced by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton after both interim Honduran president Roberto Micheletti and recently overthrown President Manuel Zelaya agreed to the appointment.
Zelaya was removed from office on June 28 after military troops kidnapped him and flew him to Costa Rica in a coup. The military move was backed by the Honduran Congress as well as the Supreme Court after agreeing that Zelaya had violated his power in attempting to change the country’s constitution.
Zelaya attempted to fly back to Honduras on Sunday and reclaim his office but his plane was blocked from landing at the Tegucigalpa airport and forced to divert to Nicaragua.
While the Organization of American States has suspended Honduras from its body and several international leaders have called for Zelaya’s return the interim government in Honduras has vowed to arrest the leader if he enters the country.
That could change when Arias heads up negotiations on Thursday as he meets with Zelaya and Micheletti.
