Understanding addiction and rehab
When an individual continually craves the use of psychoactive substances (alcohol or drugs) despite the fact that they are suffering adversely with emotional, mental, and/or physical health issues, they are said to be addicted and are referred to as an addict. Not only does the individual suffer with the adverse consequences and effects of addiction, their family members and loved ones do as well. Families are torn apart and so are relationships so as the individual suffers, so do those around them.
The groups of physiological and/or psychological processes that are used in drug addiction programs are referred to as addiction rehabilitation or rehab. The general goals and intent of any rehab center and their programs is to get individuals to stop using drugs so they experience a successful recovery from their addictions. The long-range goal is to see them return home and live substance-free without fearing that they will relapse. Most drug addiction programs have this goal, but that is where the similarities end.
What you need to know
There are certain facts about addiction as well as the different rehab facilities that you need to be aware of as follows:
25 million Americans are suffering from drug addiction – 40% of them need professional help immediately. Unfortunately, only 10% of them will get that help.
There are two basic types of programs – they are the in-patient and the out-patient drug addiction programs.
Attitude is everything – staying positive and having a good attitude during the addiction treatment and recovery process greatly increases the chance of you being successful in your endeavors and staying substance-free for the rest of your life once you return home.
Your family should be involved – your family will need to heal from the emotional and psychological grief of seeing their family member or loved one suffering with drug addiction, so it is extremely important the family is involved in the program and undergoes family therapy as well.
Drug addiction started centuries ago
For those of you who are unaware of the history of drug addiction, it should interest you to know that it has been going on for thousands of years. Recorded history has provided us with evidence that dates back to the Neolithic Era (New Stone Age) some 60 centuries ago. Narcotics were being used as far back as 6,000 years ago when the Chinese used marijuana for medical reasons around 2,737 BC.
