Seinfeld Actor Ian Abercrombie Dies

Ian Abercrombie, the British actor who played Mr. Pitt on the hit comedy Seinfeld, died last week in Los Angeles. There are conflicting reports on the 77-year-old’s cause of death. Several media outlets report Abercrombie died Thursday of complications from kidney failure while others say he suffered a heart attack. Abercrombie was battling lymphoma. He is survived by his wife, Gladys.

Abercrombie began his acting career in theatre in the early 50s and scored his first credited film role in 1977’s The Prisoner of Zenda. His big break came after he appeared as Elaine’s eccentric boss on seven episodes of Seinfeld. "I have been around as an actor for 40-odd years, and this show knocked me out of the ballpark," he said in a 1998 interview.

Following his success on Seinfeld, Abercrombie appeared in numerous US TV shows, including Dynasty, Days of Our Lives, Desperate Housewives, and Wizards of Waverly Place. His most notable film credits include The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Family Values, Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties, and Rango.
