The central coast of Peru was rocked by an early morning earthquake Monday. The U.S. Geological Survey reports a 6.3 magnitude tremor struck shortly after midnight at a depth of 24.2 miles. The epicenter was located about 9 miles southeast of Ica, a city about 168 miles south of the capital of Lima.
Officials reported no deaths, but confirmed at least 110 people suffered injuries. The manager of a local hospital told Radio Programas del Peru (RPP) that most of the wounded are being treated for “trauma and cuts.” Authorities across central and southern areas of Peru are still assessing damage to buildings. Ica officials reported moderate damage to several buildings and power outages.
Central Peru was last hit by a 6.9 magnitude earthquake in October 2011. Dozens of buildings and homes were destroyed.
