Seminar at Sea Features Kids and Money Workshop

Smart Financial Parenting in an Uncertain Economy

Financial parenting expert Jayne Pearl will be presenting her multi-generation program, “Smart Financial Parenting in an Uncertain Economy,” aboard Royal Caribbean International’s Rhapsody of the Seas cruise ship, which will departs from Seattle and ventures through Alaska’s Inside Passage from August 17 -24, 2012.

“In today's economic world, financial success requires savvy, healthy financial values and resilience: the ability to respond and recover from problems with confidence and competence,” says Pearl, who is author of the soon-to-be updated The New Kids and Money: Giving Them the Resilience to Succeed Financially (ALLL Right Books, 2012) and Kids, Wealth and Consequences: Ensuring a Responsible Financial Future for the Next Generation (Wiley, 2010).

“Seminars at sea” is a growing trend in the cruise world, where groups of people can combine vacations with opportunities to learn. “Many professions offer courses for continuing education credit, and companies increasingly schedule training and other meetings aboard cruises, focusing on management, marketing, IT or social networking,” notes Suzy Collyer, Vacation Specialist at Connection to Cruise. In addition to Pearl’s financial parenting program, Connection to Cruise offers cruises that focus on writing workshops, relationship communication skills, and wine tasting.

Pearl’s interactive, engaging program for parents, grandparents and children—together and separately—will improve the way family members communicate, help them be much more conscious and deliberate about their financial values, attitudes and behavior, and greatly enhance their understanding of basic financial concepts, tools, and values. The workshops, held during the days the ship is at sea, include exercises and worksheets to help families rethink the financial choices they face today and will confront tomorrow. For instance:

• How can parents align their money decisions, which their children observe them making, to better reflect their values?

• Amid plunging portfolios and a pittance of interest on savings, does it make sense to save today - and why force their kids to do so

• Break-neck technology advances make our electronic gizmos obsolete moments after we rip them out of the box. Should we rethink the way we spend?

• College tuition has been rising much faster than inflation, while jobs are harder to get for many graduates. Does it still pay to go to college? What's the value of a bachelor's or masters degree in today's job market?

• Most people define financial freedom as enough money to do what they want. So why are so many wealthy people unhappy and dysfunctional? What are new ways to think of financial freedom that will help your kids thrive in any economic environment?

The first 20 families to sign up will receive a free copy of Pearl’s new book.
