Fog and smoke blamed for massive pile up that killed 10 in Florida

A massive pile-up involving tractor trailers and passenger vehicles claimed the lives of ten people and injured 18 others early Sunday morning on Interstate 75 just south of Gainesville.

Police are investigating to determine the exact cause of the accident that victims say looked like the “end of the world.” 

The accident involved several tractor trailer trucks and passenger vehicles. Smoke from a brush fire combined with early morning fog set of a chain of events that police are still trying to unravel.

Police had originally closed off the highway because of reduced visibility caused by the, which may have been intentionally set.

Florida Highway Patrol released a report that showed an accident involving two tractor trailer trucks and a passenger vehicle occurred just a few hours before the massive pile-up.

When police arrived they had to rely on sound to locate victims. Numerous vehicles caught on fire further reducing visibility and slowing rescue efforts.

Police have not released the identities of the deceased. There were approximately 19 different vehicles involved in the accident.
