Dillon Gage Metals, a division of Dillon Gage Incorporated of Dallas, has donated a one-ounce gold bar designed by French couturier Jean-Paul Gaultier to the Design Industries Foundation Fighting HIV/AIDS, known as DIFFA. On the bar, an emblem created by the clothing designer displays a heart behind a banner carrying his name. The bar will be auctioned off online at through DIFFADallas.org. The bullion will be displayed at DIFFA’s Smoking Haute Style Council Announcement Party on January 26 from 7:30-9:30 PM at DISH (4123 Cedar Springs, Dallas, TX).
With gold valued at around $1,665 an ounce today, the bar – which is part of a limited series released last fall – retails for around $1,832.
“We strongly support efforts to combat HIV/AIDS in the U.S. and globally,” says Terry Hanlon, president of Dillon Gage Metals, precious metals dealers based in Dallas. “HIV/AIDS is on the decline globally, but much more work needs to be done.”
U.S. AIDS cases have leveled off after a sharp retreat in the 1990s, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The number of new HIV infections in sub-Saharan Africa has dropped by more than 26% from the epidemic's height in 1997, the United Nations program UNAIDS says. In the Caribbean, new HIV infections have fallen by a third since 2001. New infections in South and South-East Asia have declined, and in India new cases are less than half of what they were in the 1990s.
However, new HIV infections continue to rise in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Oceania, the Middle East and North Africa.
Gaultier, who lost his business partner to AIDS, has long been active in the fight to prevent the disease. He is a designer of movie costumes and singer Madonna's stage outfits, and helped bring back men's skirts as a style.
DIFFA, founded in 1984, is the oldest and one of the biggest funders of HIV/AIDS programs in the United States. DIFFA raises money for groups that combat the disease by providing preventative education programs, treatment and direct care.
