Security officials in Yemen have confirmed between 12 and 15 people died Monday night and early Tuesday morning in suspected United States drone strikes. All of the dead are believed to militants connected with al Qaeda. An unidentified tribal leader told Reuters at least four al Qaeda leaders were among the causalities, but Yemeni authorities have not confirmed his claims.
The three drone strikes occurred in the southern province of Abyan near areas controlled by the militant group Ansaar al-Sharia, which has connections with al Qaeda. United States officials confirmed a drone strike was carried out, but did not release any other details.
Also in Yemen on Tuesday, Information Minister Ali al-Amrani survived an assassination attempt unharmed. According to al-Amrani’s secretary, gunmen opened fire on the politician’s car as he left a cabinet meeting in the capital Sanaa. It is unclear who was behind the attack.
