California light rail accident leaves three dead

Sacramento, CA- A collision between a light-rail train and a SUV over the weekend resulted in the death of three people and injuries to several others. This is the worst accident for the rail line in 25 years according to system spokesman.

The accident took place Saturday at about 4pm when the driver of a SUV came into the path of an oncoming train. Video footage shows the driver of the SUV going around the crossing guardrail. Two adults and a 22 month-old child were killed; one additional passenger from the SUV is in the hospital with serious injuries.

Police say there were cars on both sides of the crossing waiting for the train to pass. This crossing is notorious for long wait times. The impact caused the train to drag the SUV 30 feet down the tracks.

Several passengers on the train received minor injuries.

According to statistics from the Federal Rail Administration there were 46 collisions involving trains and cars between 2000 and 2011 causing 9 deaths and 23 injuries.

Accident attorneys can help victims recover any costs associated with rail accidents if negligence played a part in the collision.

Accident injuries can range from minor to life-threatening and the victims face mounting medical bills, but an accident lawyer will make certain these costs are covered by the careless party. Anyone involved in an accident should contact an accident attorney immediately to begin working on their case.
