A Cambodian-flagged cargo ship anchored in the Black Sea off the coast of Eregli, Turkey sank Tuesday night in bad weather. Turkish authorities say rescue teams are currently searching for 8 of the 11 crew members. The crew included 10 Ukrainians and one Georgian. The second and third officers and a female cook were rescued soon after the Vera capsized.
The Vera was en route to Turkey’s Aliaga port with a load of scrap metal from Rostov, Russia when it ran into the storm. Rescue operations were launched immediately after the ship went down, but authorities say they were hampered by the weather. High winds and rough seas continued into Wednesday and forced authorities to temporarily cancel plans to send divers to search the wreckage of the ship.
Turkey has been battling winter weather and heavy snow that has disrupted air and maritime travel and isolated more than 2,000 villages.
