NATO officials confirm a coalition soldier died Tuesday in southern Afghanistan after being shot by a man wearing an Afghan Army uniform. The alliance did not release any other details, including the name and nationality of the service member.
Afghan officials report the shooting occurred in Helmand province’s Marjah district. Army commander Sayed Malluk said the suspect initially claimed the shooting was an accident. It is unclear if he was acting on behalf of the Taliban.
Attacks on coalition forces by members of the Afghan Army have become more common over the past year. Last April, nine Americans died when an Afghan military pilot opened fire at a base in Kabul. In December, a rogue Afghan soldier shot and killed two French soldiers in Tagab Valley.
