Doctors perform cosmetic surgery amid declining insurance reimbursements

A recent story published in the New York Times detailed to account of professional woman who went to a board certified doctor to have a face lift and a tummy tuck. What she didn’t know that her doctor was certified as an ear, nose and throat specialist.

The women realized this after her surgery was botched and left her with heavy scarring and unevenness on her abdomen.  She was forced to use up her savings to correct the botched surgery.

This has been a growing trend because doctors have seen a decline in insurance reimbursements and find that cosmetic surgery is lucrative. Cases of ophthalmologists preforming liposuction and gynecologist performing breast augmentations are becoming more common.

Though these doctors are certified to practice medicine they have not had the training that certified cosmetic surgeons have. When people decide to have liposuction or other cosmetic procedures they are not aware that the doctor they chose is not qualified to perform cosmetic surgery.

Only doctors in Texas, Florida, Louisiana and California are required to disclose which area of practice they specialize in.

To get the best results from liposuction or a face-lift the patient should ask their doctor what area of specialty they have been certified to practice. When a person goes to a board certified cosmetic surgeon they can be assured that their procedure will be performed by an expert who has the right experience.
