Coroner Who Ruled In Amy Winehouse Death Resigns, Under Investigation

Assistant Deputy Coroner Suzanne Greenaway, who investigated the death of Amy Winehouse last July, has resigned after it was discovered she did not meet all legal requirements to lead a death inquest. She resigned last November and is currently under investigation by the Office of Judicial Complaints.

Greenaway’s resignation has sparked speculation Winehouse’s case could be reopened. The singer was found dead in her London apartment on July 23. Greenaway ruled in October Winehouse’s death was caused by alcohol poisoning. Winehouse had a long history of drug and alcohol addiction. She was 25 at the time of her death.

Greenaway was appointed to Winehouse’s case by her husband Andrew Reid, who is also a coroner. Reid said he mistakenly believed Greenaway met all legal requirements to lead the inquest because of her medical and legal experience in Australia. Winehouse’s family released a statement Thursday saying they are currently seeking legal advice on the situation.
