Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) is developing an operating system that will look to attack the stronghold of Microsoft’s Windows program.
The new operating system was announced Tuesday night on Google's Web site and will be based on the company's nine-month-old Web browser, Chrome.
Google intends to rely on help from the community of open-source programmers to develop the Chrome operating system, which is expected to begin running computers in the second half of 2010.
Google has already introduced an operating system for smart phones and other mobile devices called Android that vies against various other systems, including ones made by Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL)
The move is yet another addition to the rivalry between the two conglomerates. Microsoft recently launched their new search engine Bing to take up some of Google’s share in the search engine market. Microsoft has spent $100 million on their marketing campaign for Bing.

Shares in Google stock have jumped $3.30 (0.83%) to $399.93 in early afternoon trading.
