Thomas Voeckler managed to capture his first stage victory in five years as the Frenchman took the 122-mile Stage 5 trek in the Tour de France on Wednesday. Voeckler clocked 4 hours, 29 minutes, 35 seconds to hold off Mikhail Ignatiev of Russia and Britain’s Mark Cavendish.
While the day belonged to Voeckler the Tour de France still belongs to Fabian Cancellara as the Swiss cyclist maintained his overall lead in the 26-stage race and will keep the yellow jersey heading into Stage 6 on Thursday. Cancellara’s holds a one second lead over seven-time champion Lance Armstrong.
Cancellara and Armstrong finished in the main pack as did the America’s Astana teammate Alberto Contador who sits in third, 20 seconds behind the lead.
Stage 6 will take place on Thursday, a 112-mile ride from Gerona, Spain to Barcelona.
