G8 Leaders meeting in the Italian city of L’Aquila have agreed to set a goal to significantly limit global warming by, among other objectives, dramatically reducing carbon emissions by 2050.
As part of the pact the leaders said they would push to cut carbon emissions by 80% by 2050 with the rest of the world holding a reduction target of 50%. The overall objective of the agreement was to limit global warming to 3.6F above pre-industrial levels.
While the leaders expressed optimism in regards to realizing their goal there could be significant problems if China and India are unable to meet the lofty expectations.
The subject of global warming and climate change is due to pick up on Thursday as Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Mexico and South Africa join the talks. They will be participating with the permanent members of the G8; Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, UK and the US.
