The entire staff of a Los Angeles elementary school will be temporarily replaced following a child sex abuse scandal that resulted in the arrests of two teachers. The Los Angeles Unified School District said the 128 members of the Miramonte Elementary School staff will be transferred to a non-operational facility while police investigate abuse allegations against teachers Mark Berndt and Martin Springer. Each teacher and staff member will be interviewed by authorities during their absence from Miramonte.
Qualified teachers will fill the temporary positions. Miramonte Elementary will be reopened Thursday with the new staff in place. Parents can opt to send their children to another elementary school.
Police say Mark Berndt is accused of blindfolding students and feeding them his semen. He was arrested last week and charged with 23 counts of lewd acts on students. Martin Springer is accused of fondling at least two young female students in his classroom. An unidentified female teacher has reportedly been accused of providing Berndt with students to abuse.
