Construction workers in South Africa went on a strike yesterday July 8, 2009. These construction workers are working on the stadiums being built for the 2010 World Cup. This would be Africa’s first historic World Cup tournament.
This is not a small strike by any means. Thousands of construction worker are reported to be on strike. This strike began after a demand of 13 percent pay increase was not met. They where only willing to offer a 10.4 percent increase.
This strike has also affected the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg and stadiums in Cape Town and Durban. The stadium needs to be completed by December to meet deadlines set by the FIFA before the tournament starts in June 2010. Lesiba Seshoka who represents construction workers said 70, 000 workers are involved in the strike, which will continue until employers met the demands of the workers. Fans all over are hoping to see this historic event take place. We will have to wait and see.
