NFL hands down five game suspension to Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.

Albert Haynesworth was given a five game suspension without pay for his actions in Tennessee’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. Haynesworth kicked the helmet off of the Cowboys Andre Gurode’s head and then stepped on the center’s head causing a cut that required 30 stitches.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said “there is absolutely no place in the game, or anywhere else, for the inexcusable action.” The league then handed down the longest suspension for an on-field incident in its history. The previous mark was a two game suspension given to Charles Martin who tossed Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon to the ground in a 1986 Green Bay Packers game. Martin had worn a towel with a “hit list” comprised of Bears numbers during the game.

Haynesworth may be facing more than just a suspension if Gurode decides to press charges, an act the Nashville police and district attorney have said they would be willing to pursue.

Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells spoke with Jim Fisher, the Titans head coach, after the game. Fisher apologized for the actions of Haynesworth and expressed determination in making the punishment fit the crime.

By Sunday evening Haynesworth addressed his actions, “What I did out there was disgusting. It doesn't matter what the league does to me. The way I feel right now, you just can't describe it.”

The five game suspension will cost Haynesworth close to $500,000 in lost pay.
