California’s first gay marriage ends in divorce

Just days after a California court declared that a ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional; the first legally married gay couple in the announced they have filed for divorce.

Robin Tyler actually filed for divorce from her partner of 18 years Dianne Olson on January 25th, NBC news reports. Tyler and Olson became the face of the gay marriage movement in California.

The lesbian couple married in June of 2008 just before Prop 8, was passed in November of that same year. They had a highly publicized marriage ceremony on the steps of the courthouse in Beverly Hills. The window for gay couples to marry was short, just a few months, and during that time thousands of same-sex couples tied the knot.

Tyler told NBC that the problems in their marriage were the same as a straight couple and said that a gay couple shouldn’t be held to a different standard if they are granted civil rights.

In November after Prop 8 passed the gay couples, who got married, were allowed to stay married. And just like straight couples, gay couples will also find that their marriages aren’t working and they must hire a divorce attorney.

One in two traditional couples decides to retain divorce lawyers and end their nuptials. No matter what a person’s sexual orientation is not all marriages last. Divorce attorneys are there to help a couple get through this trying time in their life.
