Choosing the right liposuction procedure requires the patient do some research

The plastic surgery industry has not only grown over the decade but many new innovative techniques have also been developed. Any person, who is considering liposuction, has a variety of techniques to choose from, but deciding which procedure will give them the best results can be difficult and requires some research on the patient’s behalf.

There are several liposuction techniques, which all use different technologies to dissolve fat. All surgical liposuction techniques employ an instrument called a cannula to suction the fat out of the areas to be operated on, but the ways that the fat is dissolved varies.

The most traditional technique is tumescent liposuction, where a plastic surgeon uses local anesthesia and injects a fluid under the skin to swell the area being operated on, the fat is then suctioned out.

Other techniques use lasers, water jets or power assisted tools that help reduce physician fatigue. Laser liposuction has the added benefit of tightening the skin as the fat is removed. Water jet and power assisted methods make it easier for a plastic surgeon to loosen the fat from the layers of skin and can reduce doctor fatigue. This just scratches the surface of the techniques that are available.

A patient should do some diligent research to determine which liposuction method is best for them. A consultation with a cosmetic surgeon is also necessary to weigh the pros and cons of each of the different liposuction methods and which one will give the patient optimal results.
