DRUG ENFORCEMENT AGENCY JOINS PROBE OF SUSPECTED PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE IN THE UNTIMELY DEATH OF MICHAEL JACKSON

Prescription Drug Abuse Suspected in the Death of the "King of Pop"

The genius of Michael Jackson, King of Pop, was laid to rest in a golden casket marking the end of an unparalleled career in entertainment that inspired legions with innovative music and dance moves, bridging race, decades and generation gaps on a global scale.  Jackson suffered a cardiac arrest in his West Los Angeles home and neither paramedics nor doctors could revive him upon arrival at the UCLA Medical Center. His sudden death and the presence of multiple prescription drugs at his home resulted in the order of a toxicity report along with his autopsy.

The Los Angeles Police Department has requested the DEA’s assistance under the allegation that
prescription drug abuse may have contributed to the music icon’s untimely death. The DEA will investigate Jackson’s doctors to determine whether the prescription drugs administered were done so within federal guidelines, including prescription drug painkillers, sedatives and antidepressants. Diprivan (Propofol), a powerful anesthetic drug, was also found in Jackson’s home. Diprivan is generally delivered intravenously for anesthetic purposes to introduce unconscious.  The presence of this drug is of particular interest to investigators as it is typically administered only in operating rooms. According to one expert, “A cc too much of this drug can change you from being high to being dead.”

Many people mistakenly believe that because a drug is prescribed by a doctor, it’s safe. Prescription drugs can be as addictive as street drugs and just as lethal but because they are distributed through professional channels, abuse can be hidden for long periods of time.
