Overturned tanker truck causes major fuel spill in Connecticut

Groton CT- Crews are still cleaning up an area of I-95 where an accident involving an oil tanker and two passenger vehicles took place on Wednesday just before rush hour.

Witnesses said that a car cut off the tanker truck causing the drover to lose control, overturn and spill almost 1,200 gallons of heating oil. The truck ran into two passenger vehicles. The car that cut off the tanker fled the scene; police are working to identify the driver.

The truck cab burst and one of the other vehicles caught fire after both drivers were pulled to safety. In total three people suffered minor injuries and were taken to local hospitals.

The Department of Transportation and Department of Energy and environmental protection worked for hours to clean up the spill. There is some concern that some of the oil will get make its way into residential water wells in the area.
