SouthCoast Recovery offers Drug and Alcohol Treatment exclusive to the diverse American Indian and Alaskan Native communities

Exclusive Drug and Alcohol Treatment Geared Towards the Needs and Identity of American Indian and Alaskan Natives

SouthCoast Recovery has developed a drug and alcohol treatment program in conjunction with AAIR – Access to American Indian Recovery – that takes into account the diverse cultural beliefs and traditions of the American Indian and Alaskan Native communities. As the sole provider in the Orange County area, SouthCoast Recovery is proud to offer a specialized holistic approach that combines guided traditional and spiritual practices with advanced therapies and a mainstream approach for lifelong recovery.

At SouthCoast Recovery, we understand that many social and health problems within Native communities are often seen as spiritually based. We share this view and believe that alcoholism and drug addiction are spiritual maladies best treated holistically with a mind, body and spirit approach. Each person who arrives at our drug and alcohol treatment center comes with a personal life experience, background, family history, cultural practices, spiritual beliefs and problems unique to their struggles with drugs and alcohol. In our experience, it is neither practical nor effective to treat each person with the same approach.

We understand that many Native people have learned to bridge two separate cultures and may feel pressure to participate in the practices of a more dominant culture, even in a drug rehab environment. At SouthCoast Recovery, we recognize there are certain traditional and spiritual practices that are sacred to Native communities and we have incorporated these into our program with the help of local Native healers, guides and teachers. Clients can experience traditional “sweats” and Pow-wows in addition to Eastern healing techniques of acupuncture and massage, and the Western practice of psychotherapy and 12-step traditions. Oral communication and story-telling are also valued traditions in Native communities and we offer individual sessions with counselors and therapists in order to assist our clients in talking through inside issues that could be contributing to drug and alcohol abuse.

Alcohol and drug abuse is merely symbiotic for underlying issues. Our goal at SouthCoast Recovery is to help each individual discover the values and beliefs that make up their authentic self through the imprint of culture, faith and family of origin. Through this process we help each person move beyond the bounds of alcoholism and drug abuse to bring mind, body and spirit into harmony so at last, they can be who they truly are.
