Leslie Carter’s Death Shines Light on Family Addiction

Leslie Carter’s apparent overdose shows how drug abuse can run in families, pointing to a genetic connection that makes some more likely to abuse.

It’s tragic in its own right that Leslie Carter, younger sister of Backstreet Boys' Nick Carter and singer Aaron Carter, died of an apparent drug overdose. But for those in the addiction field, it shines a spotlight on the issue of addiction as a family trait.

Authorities found medication to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and anxiety, as well as a muscle relaxant, near Leslie’s body. Her stepmother, Ginger Carter, told authorities that Leslie had "a long history of mental illness" and seemed depressed the morning before she died, according to an incident report from the Chautauqua County sheriff. Self-medicating and over-medicating or turning to substance abuse isn’t uncommon in those battling bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety or trauma.

Sadly, substance abuse was also a shared trait in the troubled Carter family. Aaron sought treatment for substance abuse and his big brother Nick had brushes with the law, including a DUI, and entered rehab as well.

Probably best known for appearing on the family's reality show, House of Carters, in 2006, Leslie was also an aspiring singer. Her song "Like Wow!" was featured on the Shrek soundtrack in 2001, but her recording career faltered and a 1999 debut album was never released.

Leslie is survived by four Carter siblings as well as her husband of three years and a 10-month-old daughter.
