Study shows that smoking marijuana increases accident risk

Researchers at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia found that people, who smoke marijuana before they get behind the wheel, are twice as likely to be involved in a car accident.

The researchers analyzed data from nine studies of 50,000 people in order to determine of marijuana use impaired their ability to drive. After examining accident reports and blood tests results, the researchers concluded that marijuana presented an elevated risk of a collision. The study showed that the risks increased for users over the age of thirty five. They also found that using marijuana three hours before driving doubles the risk of a traffic accident.

The results of the study were published in the February 9th edition of the “British Medical Journal.”  The authors said, “Despite being regulated in in many jurisdiction cannabis is the most widely used illicit substance in the world.” The study suggests, “that cannabis impairs performance of the cognitive and motor tasks necessary for safe driving, increasing the risk of collision.”

Most accidents are caused by the carelessness or impairment of one or more drivers. When an accident attorney is able to prove that a driver was negligent the victim may be eligible for compensation.

Accident lawyers are primarily concerned with making certain injury victims receive favorable settlements to pay their medical and property replacement expenses. With the expert representation of an accident attorney victims will get a favorable outcome for their case.
