After an increase in activity over the last several days, Indonesia’s Mount Lokon erupted Friday evening, prompting authorities to issue evacuation advisories. The eruption began around 8:20 p.m. According to the National Disaster Management Agency, Lokon is spewing ashes up to 6,561 feet into the air.
Residents within 1.5 miles of the volcano have been advised to evacuate their homes. There have been no reports of injuries or deaths.
Lokon is located on the northern tip of Sulawesi Island about 1.3 miles away from its twin, Mount Empung. It last erupted in December.
Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire and has at least 150 active volcanoes.
