Mexican authorities announced Thursday a massive drug bust in the western state of Jalisco. The Secretary of National Defense said a tip led to the discovery of 15 tons of methamphetamine in powder form on a ranch in Tlajomulco de Zuniga. The powder, estimated to be worth $4 billion, was stored in dozens of barrels, and was ready for packaging.
The Mexican army also seized materials and equipment used to make methamphetamine. No one was arrested in the raid and it is unclear which drug cartel operated the ranch. The Sinaloa and Los Zetas drug cartels are believed to have a strong presence in the area.
Authorities called the seizure “historic,” saying it is equal to half of all meth seizures worldwide in 2009. No other details were released.
