Bus Plunges Into Kashmir River, 19 Dead

A bus plunged into a river in Indian-administered Kashmir Friday, leaving all but one passenger on board dead. The accident happened in a village near Jammu. Witnesses say the bus spun out of control while going around a sharp curve. Nineteen people died.

"Out of 20 passengers onboard, 19 died on the spot while the lone grievously injured has been rescued and is being airlifted to Jammu city for specialized treatment," said local police official Farooq Ahmad Khan.

The bus was en route to Doda, a city about 186 miles southwest of Srinagar. According to multiple reports, most of the passengers were traveling to job interviews.

Fatal road accidents are common in India because of poor safety laws. According to the World Health Organization, more than 135,000 people die every year in road accidents in India.
