In a radio interview with Ryan Seacrest Friday, Madonna admitted she “wasn’t happy” with rapper M.I.A. flashing her middle finger during the Super Bowl halftime show. Madonna, 53, said the gesture wasn’t planned and seems “out of place” considering the energy on stage when they performed “Gimme All Your Luvin.'"
"I was really surprised. I didn't know anything about it. I wasn't happy about it,” Madonna told Seacrest.
"I understand it's punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy, and positivity it seemed negative,” she said.
"It's such a teenager…irrelevant thing to do," Madonna added. "There was such a feeling of love and unity there. What was the point? It was just out of place."
NBC’s delay system failed to catch the gesture in enough time to blur it. The NFL and NBC issued apologies. "There was a failure in NBC's delay system. The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing, and we apologize to our fans,” the NFL said in a statement.
"We apologize for the inappropriate gesture that aired during halftime. It was a spontaneous gesture that our delay system caught late,” NBC said.
