China has ordered that mosques remain closed on Friday in the city of Urumqi following several days of violence between Uighur Muslims and Han Chinese that has left at least 156 people dead.
Authorities have already instilled a heavy troop presence in the western city as a means of keeping order and they have already vowed to punish those responsible for the riots. The decision to keep mosques closed for Friday prayers was made to ensure public safety.
According to some reports the Chinese government fears those involved in violence will use religion to support their cause.
The violence began last Sunday following a protest staged by Uighurs who wanted justice for two Uighurs who had been killed in a brawl with Han Chinese at a toy factory in late June. During those protests it is believed many of the Uighurs began to target Han Chinese on the street. The majority of those killed in the violence were said to be Han as were more than 1,000 injured.
