Drug addiction in the US today

Substance addiction has grown into one of the most significant health problems in the US today.  The numbers of cases that are substance-related and involve serious illnesses and/or injuries have reached the 40 million mark annually.  According to the DEA’s report published in late 2009, these numbers are going to continue grow because the US is viewed as a “gold mine” for the numerous drug distributors and traffickers targeting the country.

The DEA sees the following as the major drug threats that are plaguing the US today:

• cocaine both in crack and powder form
• club drugs or MDMA’s (e.g. Ecstasy)
• heroin
• marijuana
• methamphetamines
• prescription medications

With substance abuse comes the threat of substance addiction.  We are witnessing growing numbers of people who are checking into treatment and recovery facilities every day so the need for more effective rehab programs is growing with those numbers.

The need for private addiction treatment programs
