G8 Leaders Pledge to Boost Food Supplies to Tackle World Hunger

G8 leaders have agreed to fund a three-year, $20 billion initiative that will boost food supplies aimed at reducing world hunger.

U.S. President Barack Obama, attending the Italian summit, called the pledge a moral obligation among the richer nations to help those nations struggling to feed their people.  Obama went on to say that the $20 billion pledged was in no means an end to the assistance.

As part of the pledge the G8 leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the UK and the United States said they would focus on investing in the development of agriculture of poorer nations as well as their own.

Friday was the last day of the G8 summit where leaders of the richest nations had also set goals to cut carbon emissions to control global warming.
