A South Korean pastor and his wife have been arrested for beating and starving three of their children to death. According to police in the South Cholla province town of Boseong, the couple believed their children were possessed by demons because they had fallen ill with flu-like symptoms. They beat the children, cut their hair, tied their arms and legs, and starved them to drive out the demons.
The children – ages nine, seven and three – were given only water from January 24 until their deaths on February 2. The pastor and his wife then spent nine days trying to resurrect the children through prayer. A relative discovered the children’s bodies on February 11 and contacted authorities. The couple’s 8-month-old daughter is currently in protective custody.
According to reports, the husband had been the pastor of Hyungjae (Brother) Church since March 2009. The church has been described as a cult and was not recognized by other churches.
