Less than a week after seizing 15 tons of methamphetamine in Jalisco state, Mexican authorities have arrested a major meth producer for the Sinaloa drug cartel. The ministry of public security said intelligence work led federal authorities to Jamie Herrera, also known as JH, in Culiacan, Sinaloa state. Herrera was taken into custody Monday along with an estimated $2 million worth of methamphetamine.
Herrera dealt meth in the United States in the mid 90s before moving to Culiacan to manufacture the drug. He operated out of Tijuana for several years and then began working with the Sinaloa cartel. Herrera, 43, is wanted in the U.S. for several crimes.
It is unclear if Herrera is connected to last week’s massive drug bust in Jalisco state. Authorities said a tip led them to the ranch in Tlajomulco de Zuniga where 15 tons of methamphetamine in powder form was stored in dozens of barrels. The ranch was deserted at the time of the raid. Officials called the seizure “historic,” saying it is equal to half of all meth seizures worldwide in 2009.
